Hear from some of our former bursary students
Kieran joined Latymer from a local primary school on a full bursary funded by the late Mel Smith (1971). Whilst at Latymer, Kieran made the most of the academic and co-curricular opportunities on offer and alongside playing squash, taking up guitar and mentoring younger pupils, Kieran left Latymer in 2014 with 4 A* grades at A Level and went on to study Politics with Economics at the University of Bath and achieved a high 2.1 on graduating.
He subsequently joined the accountancy firm Smith & Williamson and went from strength to strength, qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 2020. Kieran now works as a Commercial Finance Analyst at Bristol-based electric aviation company Vertical Aerospace. “My years at Latymer have meant everything to me. Latymer was a big part of my life and provided me with many things; a good education, social and life skills, fantastic teachers, and extra-curricular and academic opportunities galore.”
Leo joined Latymer in 2012 from a local primary school, supported by a bursary. After achieving A*AAA in his Design Technology, Maths, Further Maths and Physics A Levels, Leo left Latymer to pursue an integrated Masters of Engineering at Imperial College London.
Alongside his studies, Leo acted as an Academic Mentor and Senior Prefect, responsibilities he continued as a Well-Being Representative at university. Leo now lives in Austin, Texas and is a Product Design Engineer at Apple, working on projects like the new iPad. He credits his success to the support he received from his teachers, especially in the DT department, who supported him through projects like the F1 in Schools competition and a successful application to the The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship.
“Latymer’s incredible teaching staff inspired me to discover and pursue what I love by encouraging my passions and providing the support I needed to do so. I’m continually impressed by the proactive, hardworking students who demonstrate a strong eagerness to succeed, and I’m excited about Latymer’s initiative to increase support for them through bursaries — support that I was fortunate to have received myself!”
Kaine joined Latymer from a local primary school in 2008, thanks to a full bursary. After seven years of Latymer life, he studied Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics at A Level and received four A*s alongside his duties as Captain of the Rugby Team and Deputy Head Boy. He left Latymer to read Economics at Bristol University, achieving 1st Class Honours. Kaine is now an Economist in the Consultancy team at Capital Economics, focussing on bespoke economic research and analysis projects.
“It would not be an exaggeration to say that my bursary completely changed my life. I was made aware of possibilities and what I could achieve, having those choices at Latymer made me realise I could do so many things with my life. The teachers, and the environment in general, opened my eyes to what could be achieved.”
Nathan joined Latymer in Year 7 thanks to a bursary and quickly immersed himself in a variety of activities. He served as the design engineer for the school’s F1 in Schools team, participated in the Model United Nations programme, and was an active member of the Afro-Caribbean Society. His passion for engineering has led him to pursue a degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics, specialising in Aerodynamics, at the University of Southampton.
Nathan’s enthusiasm for motorsports has continued, and he recently participated in the Aleto Foundation x Aston Martin Leadership Programme. Reflecting on his time at Latymer, he shared in his final scholar’s letter, “I am so grateful for your generosity and faith in me, sending me to this amazing school. I cannot quantify just how much you have changed my life for the better. So thank you, and I promise that I won’t waste a single day.”
Apple joined Latymer for Sixth Form in 2018, supported by a bursary. She picked up a typical Latymerian schedule of hockey games, a full academic load, drama and art. And she excelled. After taking some time out after graduation to focus on her singing and modelling career, Apple joined Downing College, Cambridge to study History of Art in 2023.
Apple recently returned to the School to share her love of art history by giving a talk to the students of the History of Art Society on Gentile Bellini. She credits her success and passion for her subject to the compassion and support she received from her teachers at Latymer: “Not only did Latymer help me academically flourish, but the kindness and generosity bestowed upon me, changed me as a person and helped me blossom into a much more confident woman today. Without Latymer, I truly believe I would not be where I am or who I am today. I hope one day I am able to give back and help another student flourish at this wonderful school.”
Francesca joined Latymer in Lower Sixth from an Acton state school to study Chemistry, Maths and Politics. Alongside her academic pursuits, she was most proud of going to Calais to volunteer at the refugee camps with the charity Care 4 Calais, something she “never would have done if it wasn’t for Latymer“.
After achieving A*A*A at A Level, Francesca is studying Chemistry at Bristol University, and has just completed her year abroad at Nanyang Technological University Singapore. She said that she was “able to do this because of the outstanding support I have received every step of my university application. A Latymer education, for me, is not just about academic excellence but about developing into well rounded individuals“.
Reflecting on her time at Latymer, she wrote: “Attending the school, and all the experiences that come along with it, has had such a huge impact on who I am today. Latymer has set me up and given me the confidence to believe I can achieve whatever I set my mind to. I have made friends for life at this school and become the person I wanted to be. I owe the Latymer Foundation Bursary all of this.“
