This event brings together experienced media professionals* in the Latymer community with recent leavers and members of our Sixth form and partnership schools, who are interested in pursuing a career in this industry.

*Includes broadcasting, journalism, publishing, marketing, advertising, press, brand, the arts, PR and communications.

Panel discussion: What is the role of media in modern society?

With the rising influence of social media in the democratic process and the surge of fake news within a hyper-connected world, the relationship between mass media and the consumer has never been more complex.

Hear from the following industry leaders who will share their unique perspectives:

Mike Cooper - CEO, APAC and EMEA of Omnicom Media Group

Latymerian Mike Cooper (Class of 1979) is an experienced senior media executive having created and managed large scale businesses at a local, regional and worldwide level. Previously CEO of PHD Worldwide for 12 years,  Mike launched PHD across the Asia Pacifica region. He was awarded Media Leader of the year by Media Week/Campaign in 2018. 

Mary Hockaday - Controller BBC World Service

Latymer parent Mary has worked in journalism for most of her career. She ran the BBC Newsroom for five years and led change in the News business as digital services came to the fore. She currently leads BBC World Service, the global radio and digital service in English. Mary is passionate about making sure audiences have access to accurate, fair and relevant news to help us all make sense of the world.

Turi Munthe - Media Entrepreneur and Investor. 

Latymer parent and former journalst Turi is the founder of Parli, an encyclopaedia of opinion, and a partner at North Base Media, where he invests in media and media tech. He has founded several media companies including Demotix, which became the world’s largest network of photojournalists. He sits on the boards of The New Humanitarian, OpenDemocracy, and The Signals Network.

Dr Samir Shah CBE - Chief Executive and Creative Director at Juniper Television

Latymerian Samir Shah (Class of 1969) was recently awarded a CBE for services to Television and Heritage. He has worked in broadcasting for over forty years, the last 20 of which have been spent running Juniper. He was also Head of Current Affairs and Political Journalism at the BBC.  He is Chair of the Geffrye Museum of the Home and was Deputy Chair of the V&A.
